A showdown between Big Brown and Curlin at the 2008 Breeders' Cup Classic might still happen, but the chances seem to be getting smaller and smaller.
It turns out that Curlin, the 2007 Eclipse winner as Horse of the Year who’s coming off a dominating win at the Stephen Foster Handicap last Saturday at Churchill Downs, is more in demand than Big Brown.
Curlin, who won the Breeders' Cup Classic last fall, is being considered for the prestigious Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe turf race in France in October, the Daily Racing Form reported.
Big Brown, who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, was a huge favorite to become the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years before finishing last at the Belmont.
Whether or not the two horses go head-to-head at the Breeders’ Cup, Horse racing betting fans can get in on the action.
Bodog is offering bets on the outcome of a Big Brown-Curlin showdown, on whether or not the horses will square off, on Curlin winning the Breeders’ Cup, and on Curlin remaining undefeated in 2008.
In a head-to-head match up, Curlin is a -200 favorite and Big Brown a +150 underdog.
Curlin is +150 to win the Breeders’ Cup regardless of opponent.
Curlin may run a major turf race in the United States, possibly the Arlington Million on Aug. 9, followed by a trip for Longchamp in France for a prep race, followed by the Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 5.
The Breeders' Cup Classic is scheduled for Oct. 25 at Santa Anita race track.
The owners and trainers of Big Brown have been considering entering him in two more races this year, including the Breeders' Cup Classic, before retiring him to stud.
