Big Brown will definitely race this summer, but it may be in New Jersey and not New York, according to New York state racing officials.
The New York Racing Association said this week that whether Big Brown races in the Travers, the $1 million stakes race that highlights the Saratoga Race Course season, depends largely on how the horse does at its only confirmed race this summer, the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park, New Jersey.
The Haskell Invitational is slated for Aug. 3 and the Travers for Aug. 23.

NYRA President and Chief Executive Officer Charles Hayward said at a news conference that Big Brown may race in the Travers if he’s successful at the Haskell.
The Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes winner finished in last place earlier this month at Belmont Stakes, failing in its bid to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.
Another factor could be this week’s news that Big Brown’s trainer, Rick Dutrow, is facing a 15-day suspension by Kentucky racing officials after another horse he trains tested positive for an illegal race-day medication.
Two separate drug tests on 8-year-old gelding Salute The Count revealed the horse had twice the allowable limit of Clenbuterol in his system after finishing second in the Aegon Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs on May 2. The drug enables horses to breathe easier while exercising.
Dutrow said Wednesday that he will appeal the suspension.
