After Big Brown’s disappointing performance in the Belmont Stakes, all eyes are now on Saturday's $1 million Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs.
The race marks the return of 2007 Horse of the Year, Curlin, to U.S. thoroughbred racing. The race also marks the beginning of the handicap division of U.S. horse racing, culminating with the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic in October.
Curlin has drawn the inside post for the race and the four-year-old colt is a 3-5 favorite at online sportsbooks like Sportsbook.com.
The purse for the 1 1/8 mile race was increased from $750,000 to $1 million to insure that Curlin was entered. The winning owner will receive $620,000.
Curlin, trained by Steve Asmussen, will again be ridden by jockey Robby Albarado. The pair are on a four-race win streak which includes the Breeders's Cup Classic and the Dubai World Cup. This will be Curlin's first start since late March when he easily defeated 11 rivals in the $6 million Dubai race.
The Stephen Foster will be Curlin's second career start at Churchill Downs. He finished third in the 2007 Kentucky Derby behind Street Sense and Hard Spun.
In his career Curlin has won eight of 11 starts for $8.8 million, $1.1 million away from tying all-time earnings leader Cigar. He will carry 128 pounds in the race, 10 pounds more than the 118 pounds that Einstein will carry.
Two 5-1 horse are Einstein and Grasshopper. Einstein, with jockey Julien Leparoux, will start from post four and Grasshopper will break from post five with Garrett Gomez riding. Grasshopper will carry 117 pounds in the Foster.
Trained by Helen Pitts, Einstein is coming off a victory in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs on Derby Day.
