Big Brown, no longer hobbled by a bad hoof, is the odds-on favorite to run away with the 140th Belmont Stakes and become the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years.
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner is at 1-3 odds at Bodog and Sportsbook.com to win the Belmont on June 7 and become the first thoroughbred since Affirmed in 1978 to win horse racing’s Triple Crown.
The 3-year-old trained Wednesday for the second consecutive day, galloping 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Belmont, and the healing process in his left front hoof is "the best-case scenario," hoof lameness specialist Ian McKinlay said.
McKinlay repaired the small crack in the hoof wall Monday morning with steel sutures. Yesterday he said that because the quarter crack is healing well on its own, he did no further work on it.
Big Brown’s biggest challenge is expected to come from Casino Drive, who has had just two starts, one of those a win in the Peter Pan Stakes. Casino Drive is 7-2 at Bodog and 5-2 at Sportsbook.com to win the Belmont.
The Japan-based horse has impressive bloodlines. His dam, Better Than Honour, has produced the last two Belmont winners – Jazil and Rags To Riches. Casino Drive is scheduled to have a workout Wednesday.
Another contender is Denis of Cork, who’s at 10-1 odds at Bodog and 15-2 at Sportsbook.com. Denis of Cork worked out at Churchill Downs on Monday, going five-eighths of a mile in 59.8. He is scheduled to have one more work before shipping to Belmont Park.
Tale of Ekati, at +20-1, was also scheduled to have a workout Monday.
